Women of Southwest Virginia is a community focused and driven creative workshop culminating in a final project to further empower the women who reside in this area by utilizing performance, art installations, and storytelling. The series seeks to provide a safe space for women to share their lived experiences, connect with their community, and create art. The workshop will begin Thursday, June 20th and continue for 6-8 weeks. Participants will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Gilliam Center for the Arts dance studio at UVA Wise. Free and open to anyone 16+ that identifies as a woman or woman-adjacent gender.
Women of Southwest Virginia will have the opportunity to share their unique stories through a story circle modality for the first half of the workshop. They will also get the chance to interview other women in the community to gather more stories. Each participant will be taught basic interviewing skills in case they wish to engage in community outreach by gathering stories.
Once stories have been gathered, the group will decide on one or multiple arts-based project(s) to showcase their work and to uplift women in their community. This will encapsulate the second half of the series. Murals, art pieces, theater performances, and dance are just some of the modalities through which these stories may be expressed. The project itself will entirely depend on the stories these women gather and how they wish to bring them to light. Their final project will be showcased to the community.
Please note that shoes are not allowed in the dance studio space. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Megan Duff at cqe8re@uvawise.edu.
