W. Campbell Edmonds & Clinch Valley Concert Series

Pianist Ryan Fogg will give a free concert in conjunction with the W. Campbell Edmonds and Clinch Valley Concert Series on Thursday, Sept. 12th at 7 p.m. in Cantrell Hall at UVA Wise. This all-Beethoven program will showcase the evolution of the composer's unmistakably individualistic style by including five of his thirty-two piano sonatas and two other representative works composed between 1795-1816.

The thirty-two piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven are universally recognized as monumental masterpieces, for they are not only central to every pianist’s repertoire, but also integral to the history of Western music. Compositionally, they show daring innovation unrivaled by Beethoven’s contemporaries and unmatched by his successors. Emotionally, they run the gamut, from sorrow and turmoil to tenderness and joy. While there are some common features from one sonata to the next, each work remains strikingly unique, particularly with regard to thematic treatment. Moreover, since Beethoven wrote the sonatas over the course of his compositional career, they provide special insight into the development of his compositional approach.

Dr. Fogg is Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee, where he teaches a wide range of courses, including applied piano, piano literature, piano ensemble, theory, and ear training. Originally from Houston, Texas, Dr. Fogg holds degrees in piano performance from The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Houston, and East Texas Baptist University. Over the past several years, he has performed over 100 solo recitals in 24 different states, and he recently made his Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall. In addition to being an active solo recitalist, he is an avid chamber musician, collaborative pianist, and concerto soloist.
